Battery holds full rated capacity, scan engine performs at spec, minimal wear on housing and trigger mechanisms.

Battery lifecycle — the most common maintenance need
Lithium-ion batteries in enterprise scanners typically need replacement every 12-18 months in high-cycle, multi-shift environments, or 24-36 months in lighter single-shift use. Signs a battery needs replacement: runtime dropping below 50% of original rated capacity, device shutting down mid-shift despite showing charge, or swelling/physical deformation (stop using immediately if this occurs).

Charging dock and cradle care
Charging contacts accumulate dust, oxidation, and debris over time, causing intermittent charging failures that are often mistaken for battery failure. Wipe charging contacts on both the device and the dock monthly with a dry cloth or isopropyl alcohol wipe. Inspect dock pins for bending or corrosion — damaged contacts cause charging failures that no battery replacement will fix.
Scan engine wear patterns
Scan engines degrade gradually with cycle volume rather than failing suddenly in most cases. Warning signs: increased scan attempts needed for a successful read, reduced scan range, or intermittent complete failure to decode. High-cycle environments (assembly lines, high-volume fulfillment) wear scan engines faster than standard warehouse picking rates.
Scan window cleanliness matters as much as internal component wear — a dirty or scratched scan window can mimic scan engine failure. Clean scan windows with a soft, lint-free cloth; avoid abrasive materials that can scratch the window and permanently degrade read performance.
