Damaged Barcode or Broken Scanner? How to Tell the Difference
Before you ship a scanner in for repair, scan a freshly printed reference barcode. If it reads cleanly, your field labels are damaged — fix the printer, not the scanner. If the fresh barcode also fails, the scan engine is the problem and needs replacement (typically $209 with 48-hour turnaround).

⚡ The 60-Second Test: Is It The Barcode Or The Scanner?
- Print a fresh barcode label from a known-good printer (or pull one off a sealed product box from a different brand).
- Wipe the scan window with a lint-free cloth and a drop of 70% isopropyl alcohol.
- Pull the trigger 6 inches from the fresh barcode. Check for a clean aimer/laser line.
- If it scans on the first try → your scanner is fine. The field labels are damaged.
- If it won't scan or only reads at point-blank range → the scan engine is failing.
This single test saves customers thousands of dollars a year in unnecessary repair shipments. Run it before you do anything else.
Signs the Barcode Is The Problem
If you see any of these on your field labels, your scanner is innocent. Fix the label source and the read failures stop.
Visible Voids or Streaks in the Bars
White gaps running through the dark bars — almost always a worn thermal print head or low ribbon. Reprint and retest before suspecting the scanner.
Faded or Low-Contrast Print
Pale grey bars instead of solid black. Caused by worn print heads, wrong label stock (direct-thermal vs. thermal-transfer), or heat/UV exposure over time.
Smudged, Wrinkled, or Torn Labels
Physical damage from forklifts, pallet jacks, or shrink-wrap. The bar pattern is broken — even a perfect scanner can't decode missing data.
Curved, Reflective, or Wet Surfaces
Labels wrapped around drums, on glossy plastic, or on cold/condensing product. Glare and curvature distort the bar pattern at the imager.
Signs the Scanner Is The Problem
When the fresh-barcode test fails too, the device needs professional diagnosis. Here's what you're usually looking at.
No Aimer Dot or Laser Line
Pull the trigger and look at the scan window — if you don't see a red aimer or laser, the scan engine is dead. This is a hardware repair ($209).
Only Reads at Point-Blank Range
Scanner only decodes when the window is touching the label. The imager has lost focus or the laser diode is worn — both fixed by scan engine replacement.
Scratched or Cracked Scan Window
Micro-scratches scatter the aimer light and prevent clean decoding. Window replacement is fast and inexpensive vs. living with daily misreads.
Beeps Without Decoding, Or Reads Intermittently
Classic sign of solder fatigue on the scan engine connector. Usually progresses to full failure within weeks — repair now is cheaper than emergency repair later.

How to Fix Damaged Barcodes At The Source
Replace the Print Head
Thermal print heads wear out at 30–50 miles of label travel. Voids and streaks always mean the head — not the scanner.
Match Stock to Environment
Use thermal-transfer (with ribbon) for cold storage, wet, or chemical environments. Direct-thermal fades and smudges fast in those conditions.
Protect High-Wear Labels
Lamination or a polyester overlay on labels that ride pallets, racking, or totes — costs pennies, saves daily misreads.
Increase Print Darkness
Most label printers have a darkness/heat setting. Bumping it 1–2 levels often eliminates faded-bar issues immediately.
