If you've never sent a barcode scanner for professional repair, it can feel like a black box. At Red Barcode Planet we believe transparency builds trust — so here is exactly what happens to your device from the moment it arrives at our Wheeling, IL bench to the moment it ships back to you.
Step 1: Intake and Logging
When your device arrives, it's logged into our system with your name, contact info, device model, and serial number. Each device gets a unique repair ticket tied to your contact record. This is how we track every device through the process and maintain your repair history for future reference.
Step 2: Free Diagnosis
Every device receives a full diagnostic before any work begins. Our technicians test scan engine function, touch and display response, battery health, button functionality, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, the charging circuit, and physical housing integrity. This takes 15–30 minutes per device and is included at no charge.
Step 3: Quote and Approval
After diagnosis, we contact you with a flat-rate repair quote covering parts and labor. We explain exactly what's wrong and what the repair involves. If you approve, we proceed. If you don't — or if we determine the device is beyond economical repair — you pay nothing. That's our No Fix No Fee guarantee.
Step 4: The Repair
- Screen / digitizer — LCD removed, new assembly installed and calibrated.
- Scan engine — imaging module swapped, realigned, and bench-tested.
- Battery — old cell removed, new battery installed, full charge cycle verified.
- Trigger — mechanism disassembled, worn parts replaced, tested under load.
- Housing — cracked panels replaced, sealed, and stress-tested.
Step 5: Quality Control Testing
Every repaired device goes through QC before packaging: 200+ barcode scans across multiple symbologies, full button check, vibration-table drop simulation, 30-minute battery drain test, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity confirmation. A device only ships when it passes every test.
Step 6: Return Shipping
Your repaired device is packaged in protective foam and shipped via UPS Ground with tracking. You receive a tracking notification automatically. The 90-day warranty starts from the day it ships.
How Long Does the Whole Process Take?
Most devices: 24–48 hours repair time after receipt. Total time including shipping both ways for continental US customers: 3–5 business days. 24-hour rush repairs are available on request. Get a free quote to start.
Real-World Example
A regional distributor shipped a Zebra TC52 with intermittent scan failures on a Monday morning. It hit our intake bench Tuesday at 9:14am, completed diagnosis by 9:45am (scan engine misalignment plus a hairline window crack), got quote-approved by 11am, repair finished and QC-passed by 4pm Wednesday, and shipped UPS Ground that evening — back in the customer's hands Friday. Total clock time from drop-off to redelivery: 4 business days.
Scenario based on the type of repair work we typically perform. Not a verified case study.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Shipping without a ticket number — slows intake by 1–2 days while we match the device to a customer.
Skipping the included diagnosis to 'just replace the screen' — root cause is sometimes a different component.
Assuming a 90-day warranty covers a new, unrelated failure — it covers same-issue recurrence only.
Not noting whether accessories (cradle, battery, stylus) should be tested with the device.
What to Do Next
Request a free quote with model and symptom, ship the device with the ticket number inside the box, and email the tracking number. We'll handle intake, diagnosis, quoting, repair, QC, and return — and keep you updated at each step.
